The Indiana University Arts and Humanities Council hosts the annual Granfalloon: A Kurt Vonnegut Convergence this week (May 10-12, 2018), to celebrate the life and work of author Kurt Vonnegut.

Granfalloon celebrates the challenged artistic traditions and uniqueness of Vonnegut and his work through offering a wide variety of events, including academic talks, a staged reading of God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, performances from local to Grammy-award winning artists, and many other creative activities.

The wacky term “Granfalloon” is a word created by Vonnegut in his book Cat’s Cradle. The definition is a “false karass,” or “a proud and meaningless collection of human beings,” often used in reference to The Communist Party or Daughters of the American Revolution. Hoosiers were one of Vonnegut’s favorite examples of what the term means; hence, the festival’s namesake.

Though Vonnegut once also referred to Bloomington as a “hell hole,” his deep ties to Indiana and the fandom of Arts and Humanities councilmen Ed Comentale (director) and Joe Hiland (communications specialist) led the two to create Granfalloon.

Comentale refers to Vonnegut as a “Hoosier hero who celebrated the arts as an everyday practice.”  Both Comentale and Hiland believe he is a “presiding spirit and godfather of the arts and humanities.”

The summer conference-festival hybrid is intended to spark interest in both younger and older generations. Many young adults are just becoming familiar with Vonnegut’s work, and are intrigued by many of the artists lined up to perform; while older generations have enjoyed Vonnegut for decades, and are able to further enjoy the discussions and readings.
