Indiana State’s new FAFSA law has said that all seniors are required to do the application whether or not they are eligible or not. The new law may be controversial to some people because they don’t like that they’re about 180 questions that are quite personal and that they would be forced to answer all of them. FAFSA is known for being time consuming.
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is used to help students pay for things in college like tuition, housing, food, books and supplies, and transportation. A lot of things would be taken care of but that’s only if your application says you’re eligible for it because not every student is eligible depending on financial need. One way that is determined is a student’s parents letting their income.
Patrick Cannon, a South counselor, said “Our message has always been you should fill out the FAFSA no if’s, and’s, or but’s, you never know,” Cannon said. He continued saying; “I don’t ever like certain laws that mandate everyone has to do everything, I think it should be strongly encouraged but I don’t know if I would go as far as saying it’s a good thing because some people don’t like having the federal government in their financial record and those kinds of things, which they are anyway when you file taxes.
Summer Fields, a senior at South high school stated “i’m kind of neutral about it. I mean it was not super inconvenient to fill out and it’s not like it took me too much time, but trying to find my tax records as someone who is filing as an independent student was kind of difficult. I didn’t really like that part but everything else was fine” This law goes into effect for the high school class of 2024, this could be enough time for students, schools, and faculty to get acclimated for the new requirements.
