South’s Samsung Solve for Tomorrow team has officially become one of the national co-champions of Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow contest. Their invention, the Storm Shield, earned the team a $100,000 prize package in Samsung technology and classroom resources.
The Storm Shield is a headband designed to protect hearing aids from damage by detecting potentially dangerous motion and alerting the wearer with a beep. You can learn more about it from the team themselves at the pitch they made in DC. South’s team shares the national title with two other schools: one that created an oral scan to detect early stages of oral cancer, and another that invented AKQUA-Gel, a smart bandage that tracks the healing process of a wound and can administer medicine.
Although the club had already been named a national finalist, this latest recognition marks the team’s final—and most significant—win in the competition. The Solve for Tomorrow contest includes several prize tiers: state finalists, state winners, national finalists, and finally, national winners.
This victory not only brings recognition to South’s STEM program but also highlights the impact of student innovation. The Storm Shield joins a list of creative and meaningful projects recognized by Samsung’s nationwide challenge.
