After waiting for three years, as of August 6th, season two of Netflix’s Wednesday is finally here! The first half of the season has been released a full four weeks before the second half. As someone who enjoyed season one, I was a bit disappointed by this delayed release, but I suppose that’s just how it goes. Now, I’m eagerly awaiting the continuation of the story and hope it will be worth the wait.
So far, there are many aspects of this season that I really appreciate, especially the darker tone compared to the first season. I found myself genuinely spooked during several scenes, which was a refreshing change. I also enjoyed seeing more of the Addams family this time around; having more involvement from the parents, Grandmama’s presence, and the return of Uncle Fester added a fun dynamic. Additionally, there were some delightful minor touches, like the animation for the boy with the Clockwork Heart story and the music class’s use of “Zombie” by The Cranberries while Slurp was rampaging through the asylum.
Let’s discuss the dislikes. I felt there were an overwhelming number of subplots that distracted from the main story. For instance, Agnes’ introduction as an ally, the camp dispute between the outcasts and the Boy Scouts, and the Slurp subplot all contributed to making Wednesday feel almost like a supporting character in her own show. Another thing I didn’t like was some of the characters’ new dynamics, like Eugene and Pugsley not getting along as I expected them to become friends because Eugene was in a similar situation of being an outcast among the outcasts a year earlier. I also found Enid’s new attitude towards Wednesday’s plan annoying, as she did not want to be involved at first, but then felt left out later on. With all these dynamics in play, I can’t help but wonder how they will influence the unfolding story in the rest of the season.
Here are my predictions for the rest of Wednesday season two.
1. Slurp will return to his former, more functional self and will find a way to control Tyler’s Hyde, therefore putting the school in danger again
2. Wednesday will find a way to retrieve the contents of Goody’s book
3. Tyler and Enid will have a rematch, which may result in Enid’s death
4. The principal will end up being a good guy and will help save the school
5. Lady Gaga’s character will be a core plot component to help save the school again
In the end, while season two of Wednesday has its share of standout moments and a significantly darker tone that I genuinely appreciated, the abundance of plot devices and some character dynamics left me feeling overwhelmed. It’s clear the creators are aiming for an intricate story, but I hope they find a balance that keeps Wednesday at the forefront. As I await the second half of the season, I’m excited to see how all these subplots come together and whether or not my predictions come true.
