As many people have heard, Bloomington South has had a surprisingly high amount of transfers on the football team this year. Finite teacher and defensive line coach, Drew Frey, explained how there have been around 10 student transfers this school year. Frey said, “it has been considerable compared to the other years I’ve coached…it’s a lot more than we have had in the past.” This leads us to question why are there so many football team transfers this year and is there a reason that connects them all, or is it all purely out of coincidence?
Cohen Fisher, who plays as a kicker for South’s team, recently transferred from Tri Junior Senior High School in Indiana. Fisher moved to Bloomington for unrelated reasons and playing football was an addition to his transferal.
Defensive line player, Derek Willis, transferred this school year all the way from Texas. When he was asked about the football program at South and whether or not it was a factor in his transferring, Willis said “it was just a plus once I transferred, but also, I saw the weight program and I really liked it.”
Also from Texas, Duncan Sutherland plays left tackle for the football team. He also transferred due to outside reasons. However, Sutherland said, “I saw that Bloomington South was really good, so I wanted to come here instead of North or Martinsville.”
Ross Ogden, linebacker for the team, recently transferred from Bloomington North. Ogden said, “with my college opportunities, I thought it would be better to come here because of the program…along with my dad moving to the South district my senior year.” When asked if he was worried about transferring to a rival school, he said, “no, for my situation, I actually got quite a bit of support and, playing sports growing up, I still had friends here, so that transition was really easy.”
It appears that for most of these transfers, football was simply an addition to their switching schools. However, South has made a name for its football program, which is off to a commanding 4-0 start to the season, appealing to many students.
Although many South students are happy with the transfers this year, North students prove to be quite upset. The North student section held up signs saying “Coach Johnson Recruit Us” at the game on Friday, September 12th.
