Welcome to Optimize, a weekly update to keep you informed on what has happened during the week. Here are five national/international stories (and one local one) that you should know:

Seven year-old Guatemalan migrant dies after being in ICE custody for 20 days

A seven year old girl from Guatemala was held in Border Control custody and died of dehydration and shock whilst crossing the U.S/Mexico border. The girl was apparently supplied food and water, but she had frequent seizures and required extra care.

Bomb threat to Sandy Hook Elem. on six year anniversary of shooting

On Friday morning, Sandy Hook Elementary School received a phone call saying that a bomb was sent to the school on the six year anniversary of the shooting. The students were immediately sent home for the day, but thankfully, it was a false alarm.

‘Baby it’s Cold Outside’ culture debate

The heated debate continues over the classic Christmas song, ‘Baby it’s Cold Outside.’ The carol has been under heavy scrutiny for having lyrics that imply a possible date rape. Susan Loesser, the daughter of the couple who originally performed the song in 1958, says, “You have to look at things in a cultural and historical context.”

College football bowl games start this weekend

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. College bowl games start this weekend, with the spotlight on the Mitsubishi Motors Las Vegas Bowl. The game features Fresno State, who went 11-2 and are fresh off a conference championship win over No. 25 Boise State, as well as Arizona State and Pac-12 school that finished 7-5.

Largest buck ever shot in America

This past November Keith Szablewski shot a potentially world record buck. The state of Illinois hosted this buck that could possibly score as high as 51 points. This would out score the previous record holding buck by 4 points. The buck will have an evaluation in July to determine whether it will take over the world record.

Public shooting in France, shooter is killed by police

The manhunt for the shooter who left three dead and 13 injured in Strasbourg, France ended in the death of the suspect. The attacker was claimed as a member of the terrorist group Islamic State.

Local Bonus: Straight No Chaser visits Bloomington

The famous a capella group, formed at Indiana University, visited the auditorium and performed.
