Theatre South has adapted the classic novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen into a play. It’s been on the works since late August, according to cast members, but it’s finally ready for students and families to come enjoy it either on November 20th, 21st, or 22nd at 7 p.m., as well as at 2 p.m. on November 22nd.
Pride and Prejudice is a classic, following the enemies to lovers trope, one of the first of its kind at the time it was written. Senior Lucinda Novak, who will be playing Elizabeth Bennet on November 20th and November 22nd both at 7 p.m., said that Pride and Prejudice is a “timeless love story” and she feels that with “lots of modern romances and books and movies coming out, Pride and Prejudice is a love story that people always end up pulling back to” and that they have adapted it with dances and songs in such a way that is really interesting to watch.
Adapting a classic novel as complex as Pride and Prejudice takes a lot of work yet Theatre South seems to have done it. They have been rehearsing for a while, and, Christopher Nunez, a senior playing Mr. Darcy, said that since the play is set during the Regency era, the play is “fancy and the costumes are nice, and [they] were all British, so [they] have accents”, and in order to achieve the accents they had a dialect coach come in to teach them all.
Novak said that the play is full of emotions and there will be “moments of laughter and moments of tears” but it’s all worth it, since according to Nunez, to be able to see “it portrayed in a way other than the movie or the book is really interesting, and it’s not a chance many people get.” Don’t forget to purchase tickets and watch this timeless story.
