Recently the banners celebrating student athletes have been removed from the tennis court fences in BHSS. In previous years these banners would be hung up to celebrate graduating student athletes.
An anonymous complaint was filed to the Bloomington city government on Feb 27 which claimed that there were “Distracting business signage advertisements always up on south fence.” This report led to the city government inspecting the banners and asking that they be taken down until an arrangement can be set up.
David Hittle, the Director of Planning and Transportation for Bloomington, said the main ordinance used was “Title 20, specifically the zoning ordinance,” for context this ordinance includes signage regulations which determine whether a sign can be put up outside a building.
Hittle also explained that no violation was issued, this is partially due to the extremely minor nature of the situation. Finally, he also explained that, as a result of discussions with the administration, South will have its own “signage package” which gives South special privileges around hanging up signs. This has been confirmed by Matthew Corry, the tennis coach at South, who said “The administration is working with the city to resolve the issue.”
